Research is concentrated in areas pertinent to the purification of water and wastewater for human consumption and reuse. There is a strong emphasis on wastewater reclamation and reuse, taking advantage of combinations of engineered and natural processes such as advanced oxidation and soil-aquifer treatment to provide water purity and defense in depth against human and environmental exposure to residual contaminants. Systems analytical approaches are used to provide assurance of water security (reliability in meeting projected water demands) at lowest cost and with acceptable risk in chronically water short areas like the southwestern United States through combinations of engineered measures and water use management. This function must be carried out in the presence of increasing uncertainty related to climate variation and population growth projections.
